American Chemical Society Fall 2021 Presentation

SAN DIEGO, CA, June 29, 2021 — SMSbiotech is proud to be presenting at the ACS (American Chemical Society) Fall 2021: Resilience of Chemistry. This event will be held in Atlanta, GA from August 22-26th, 2021.

Dr. Abdulkader Rahmo will be presenting under the topic of Cell and Gene Therapy: Development and Manufacturing of Cell Therapy Products

TITLE: Effect of Small Mobile Stem (SMS) Cells on Alveolar Type 2 Lung Cells at Gene Expression Level

ABSTRACT: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major worldwide respiratory disease. It is the 3rd leading cause of death from chronic diseases worldwide with high impact on quality of life and morbidity. Currently, there is no cure for this disease and no therapy to replace or regenerate destroyed alveoli. Alveolar type 2 (AT2) cells are key to alveoli regeneration and are considered lung progenitor cells. They possess the natural ability to proliferate and differentiate into alveolar type 1 cells. Human small mobile stem (SMS) cells, with their small size, mobility, resilience, angiogenic effect, flexibility in route of clinical administration, are potential strong candidates for cell therapeutic treatment. An in vitro differential gene expression study has been conducted on AT2 cells in the presence or absence of SMS cells. The result of this study demonstrates a substantial effect on a wide array of genes (1310 genes), many of which are currently proposed or investigated as targets for drug treatment of lung degenerative diseases.

SMS cell regenerative approach is likely to be pathological agent agnostic. Patients with other lung degenerative diseases and those who are affected by current or future respiratory pathogen outbreaks may benefit from this potential treatment.
